Shelburne, Vermont 

Formerly part of an estate designed by Frederick Law Olmstead, this manor house, set on 17 acres on the shores of Lake Champlain, was constructed in the 1930’s in the French Country style. The work included extensive renovations to the main house, the addition of a large recreation wing with indoor pool, and a new landscape plan featuring stone courtyards, an apple orchard, wildflower meadow and circular drive. The pool house was conceived as a “modern ruin” – a contemporary version of the Roman bath. It was designed to serve as a refuge from the over stimulation of contemporary life; a place to meditate, recreate, contemplate; a place where the elements – earth, wind, fire and water – are celebrated and revered.
